Common Penis Myths and Realities

Review Date : September 12th, 2009

If there’s one thing about male sexuality that has been subject of centuries-long contention and controversy, it would be no other than the good old average size penis. There are tons of myths surrounding the average size penis, especially when it comes to determining penile length and girth. This lack of scientifically proven and credible information is why penis-related psychological disorders and conditions, like small penis syndrome or penile dysmorphophobia, are now becoming vastly common to the global male populace.

A lot of men have anxieties about the size of their penis, thinking that they have little willies when in fact what they have is an average size penis. When this anxiety becomes so severe that it starts to affect men’s psychological state and their relationships with other people, it is often classified and considered as penile dysmorphophobia. In the June 2007 edition of the British Journal of Urology, one of the cited findings on causes of small penis syndrome is early childhood penis comparisons and pornographic/erotic imagery.

This male penis envy has often been likened to women’s weight anxieties, with some people referring to penile dysmorphophobia as the male counterpart of anorexia nervosa.

Length of an average size penis

The subject of average penile length is a common bone of contention among sexologists, urologists, and researchers. Different research methods yield different results, so there really is no internationally defined and recognized range for average size penis length. What we can do however, is get the mean of all the published average lengths and use that as our yardstick. If this is the case, the average size penis length in its erect state is four, or four and a half, to six or six and a half inches.

Race and average size penis length

“Once you go black, you never go back.” This is what Lattrell Spencer’s character in the movie White Chicks says about Caucasian women who have sex with Black men. Popular media references such as this only further perpetuate the long-standing misconception that African-American men are endowed with bigger penises as compared to men of other races.

As a result, men of other races feel that their average size penis is inferior and really small compared to penises of African-American men. While numerous studies have concluded that there is in fact no proven scientific correlation between race and average penis size, a lot of men still think that they will forever be inferior to African-American men in terms of average size penis measurements – a perspective that only aggravates the ego-damaging condition of penile dysmorphophobia.

Shoe size and average size penis length

This is perhaps one of the longest-standing mythical correlations regarding average size penis ranges, which claims that a man’s shoe size is directly proportional to the length of his penis. Like other myths that relate other body parts to average penis size, this one has also been debunked by numerous studies. An example of such study include the one conducted in University College London, where they measured the penis length and shoe sizes of more than 100 respondents and found no correlation whatsoever between the two measurements.
